HOSTAGE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukabvDvZBXE

Opening sequence of thriller 1)

The trailer of this film has many conventions of a thriller. As the credits are going on there, is red and black colours shown. The red colours signify that there will be danger and blood. Furthermore the black colour signifies that there may be a dark atmosphere thrughout the movie. Also there is voyerism within this opening sequence. for example when the sniper is looking at the antagonist through his scope.

The sub- genre I would class this film in would be a crime thriller because there is a hostage negotiator who is trying to prevent the antagonist from killing the boy and his mother.  This creates suspense and tension as the man could his hostages at any time.

Furthermore the camera shots used also help to create tension. At the beginning of the clip we are able to see the protagonist through the view of the snipers scope. This connotes that the man in the house is in danger and his life may be at risk. Also a high angle shot of the house shows that the gun man inside is not in control and is inferior. however this plays with the conventions of a usual thriller as the gun man ends up getting what he wants.

Finally this clip has omniscient narration. This creates mystery as we are able to see that the boy is being hurt however the protagonist is unable to do anything about it.
